“Making Stuff” outreach activity

On campus over intersession? Come volunteer at a half-day “Making Stuff” outreach program! This is an event for more than 700 middle school students that will coincide with a PBS NOVA show called Making Stuff that’s all about materials science. They’ve asked Princeton to conduct an education outreach event to complement the 4-part TV series and get kids excited about science and engineering. We’d like as much undergraduate involvement as possible. Please e-mail pmrs@princeton.edu if you’ll be available and willing to help out! You can propose your own activity or generally help out at ones that have already been organized.

Join us for dinner on Thursday for a discussion with Prof. Andrew Houck from the electrical engineering department about his group’s research in the area of quantum computing and the role materials science plays in these developments. We will also discuss upcoming PMRS events, including a field trip to the Met to learn about art restoration and preservation. Indian food will be provided. Come have a dinner discussion on Materials Science of Art Conservation with Professor George Scherer!
Professor George Scherer is the William L. Knapp ’47 Professor of Civil Engineering, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Princeton Institute for the Science and Technology of Materials (PRISM). Prior to this, he was a member of the Central Research Department of the DuPont Company. Professor Scherer received his BS, MS, and a PhD in Materials Science all from MIT. Currently, his group is interested the mechanisms of deterioration of concrete and stone, particularly by crystallization of ice and salts in the pores.
